About Bedlington Terrier

Background
Originating in the north of England the Bedlington is one of the oldest terrier breeds. The first dog to be actually called the Bedlington was "Young Piper", bred in 1825 by a Mr Joseph Ainsley of Bedlington, Northumberland.

Average Lifespan
Bedlingtons live up to 15 years of age.

Breed Personality/Characteristics/Temperament
The Bedlington is one of the most affectionate and happy dogs. They love children, friends, tradesmen, the dog next door or anyone else who has the time to spare but are also protective towards their family. Bedlingtons are very good at telling if there are any unwanted visitors in the vicinity.

Compatibility with other pets
Bedlingtons are social animals and enjoy the company of other animals. However the males become somewhat territorial and it is not a good idea to run two Bedlington males together.

Care Requirements
The coat does not naturally moult and requires trimming about every 6-8 weeks. A bath once a week and a comb through is a good idea. The ears should be kept clear of hair. This can be done at the same time as their regular trim.

Exercise is minimal. Although the Bedlington does like a good walk to the park they can be kept in shape by chasing a ball around the back yard.

Ideal Owner/s
Ideally the Beldington is the ideal comapnion for a family or the person living on their own. They love children and tend to stay near people if they can. Bedlingtons prefer the company of people to that of other dogs.

In Conclusion
Now you know a little about the Bedlington and have decided this is the dog for you or you want more information, make contact with the breed club or your State controlling body for purebred dogs. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog shows where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs.
