About Briard

BriardBackground
The Briard is an old French breed which goes back in history as far as Charlemagne having been seen in tapestries of that period. He has been used in France through the centuries as a working sheepdog and guardian of the flock and homestead.

Due to their intelligence they were used during World War 1 as red cross dogs, sentry dogs and ammunition carriers.

Breed Personality/Characteristics/Temperament
The Briard should be very intelligent and lively and his teperament should be fearless with no trace of timidity or aggression. This often translates into boisterousness and unless a puppy is trained from an early age you can end up with an unmanageable adult.

Care Requirements
The Briard is a high maintenance breed. His long coat requires regular brushing (every day or two). Particular attention must be padi around the ears, mouth and eyes. Grooming should start at 8-10 weeks to get your puppy used to being brushed. Briards have unique double dewclasws on their hind feet - care must be taken to keep the nails short.

Because of this size and substance the Briard needs plenty of exercise and training.

Ideal Owner/s
Active people or families who are prepared to put time and effort into looking after a large, active, longcoated dog. Because of his size care should be taken with small children.
