About Finnish Lapphund
Background
A medium sized spitz type breed, which was originally developed to herd reindeer with the Saame people in northern Finland.
Average Lifespan
12-15 years of age.
Breed Personality/Characteristics/Temperament
Very alert and trainable dogs. Many still have fairly strong hunting/herding instincts and may not be trusted with small livestock unless trained otherwise. Very friendly towards people and children. Not vociferous barkers but will bark if not discouraged from early age. Outgoing temperament. Ideally suited for doggy disciplines like agility, obedience and working trials.
Compatibility with other pets
Mix well with other breeds of dogs and okay with cats.
Care Requirements
Grooming about 0.5 hours a week. Careful feeding - a very hungry breed who is inclined to eat too much for its own good. An active breed requiring about 1 hours walking per day - will take a lot more.
Ideal Owner/s
Active family group - breed needs a reasonable amount of exercise and would not be suited to a sedentary lifestyle. Owners need to realise the intelligence of the breed and ensure suitable training to keep mind active as much as body.
