Services Eastern Suburbs Obedience Dog Club Inc offers an extensive range of dog training activities. These start from basic dog socialisation and basic obedience so that the family pet can be a socially accepted companion in public. A higher level of training is available (and encouraged) so that the dog and owner can participate in obedience trials.
Instruction is given for Community Companion Dog - CCD, Companion Dog - CD, Companion Dog Excellent - CDX and Utility Dog - UD standards. The club hosts one open obedience trial each year. We also have a long history with tracking and hold a tracking trial each year. The club has also demonstrated at a number of public gatherings to promote responsible dog ownership in the community.
The level to which one can rise in dog obedience is largely governed by the enthusiasm of the owner. Having a well trained dog is a joy for all members of the family. Training at our club is by gentle encouragement and reward. Catching the dog doing something right and then reinforcing that behaviour produces a well behaved canine who is happy, loving and loyal.
Club History The Eastern Suburbs Obedience Dog Club started over 30 years ago with its first President and Secretary Mr Geoff Cabena and Mrs Betty Cabena. They nurtured the club through its formative years and also though a number of locations within Australia. Betty is a full panel judge with many years experience and is now patron of the club.
The club has produced a number of Australian Obedience Champions as well as hundreds of dog obedience titles. The club was originally formed in Doncaster but then moved into a number of locations in Mitcham before finally settling at Simpsons Reserve in 1996.
The current President, Brian Arter, has been with the club for most of its existence. He has trained dogs to Australian Obedience Champion level and is very active in dog obedience issues. The current Secretary, Andrea Sciberras, has been with the club for over 22 years and has trained dogs to Australian Obedience Champion level. Anne is also very active in tracking.
Each of the instructors at the club has had a variety of experience with all breeds of dogs. All are unpaid volunteers who give their time freely to promote the cause of responsible dog ownership.
The Eastern Suburbs Obedience Dog Club is affiliated with the VCA (Victorian Canine Association Inc.)
